EMS Annual Meeting, 4–8 Sep 2023, Bratislava & online: Call for session proposals until 15 Jan 2023

We plan for the 2023 Annual Meeting of the European Meteorological Society – European Conference for Applied Meteorology and Climatology to take place as a hybrid event at the University of Economics, Bratislava, & online from 4 to 8 September 2023: https://www.ems2023.eu
In light of the feedback from EMS2022 participants we will further develop the hybrid format.

Call for session proposals

Everyone is invited to contribute to the building of the scientific programme by proposing new sessions and conveners: Please visit the present Skeleton Programme and use the tools provided to insert your proposal in the appropriate part of the programme: https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EMS2023/provisionalprogramme

We encourage all to build diverse convener teams, considering different genders, career stages, and multiple countries or institutes. Please note, that we expect that those volunteering as conveners are normally planning to attend the EMS Annual Meeting; at least two of the conveners need to attend the event onsite in Bratislava. Details regarding convener tasks are available at: https://www.ems2023.eu/information_for/convener_guidelines.html

This public call for session proposals is open until 15 January 2023. Following this, the Programme and Science Committee will compile the final session programme for the call for abstracts.

Europe and droughts: hydrometeorological processes, forecasting and preparedness

A particular focus of the 2023 Annual Meeting, reflecting the interests and activities of the host institutions in Slovakia, will be on droughts and drought-related challenges:
Multiple mechanisms trigger droughts: shortfall of precipitation, soil moisture deficits, or reduced moisture supply from snowmelt. Consequently, a holistic and multidisciplinary approach is needed to understand and predict droughts and to develop preparedness, adaptation, and mitigation strategies. In addition, many rivers and river catchments cross country borders, which calls for transboundary cooperation and action.
Therefore, we intend to address drought-related challenges from several angles; session conveners are welcome to consider addressing specific aspects of this additional focus if it is relevant to the scope of their session; however, this is no requirement. Please visit the website for more details: https://www.ems2023.eu/programme/additional_focus.html

Aims & opportunities

The Annual Meetings of the EMS aim at fostering cross-fertilisation of ideas, feedback between science and applications, and the involvement of all the diverse actors in the fields of weather, climate, water and the environment. The session programme will offer many opportunities for collaboration across the entire weather and climate enterprise (public, private, academic, users, and NGOs) to benefit societies in Europe and worldwide.

We would be delighted if you would inform your colleagues about these opportunities and distribute the invitation to your networks.
